David was always called "Dock" because of his initials D.R.
David's parents have not been confirmed. His stated date of birth was reported as May 9, 1865, 1866 and 1867 at Rock Spring, Sullivan County, TN but his listed father died in May 1864 and he has not been linked to any other Blakley family. Mary Blakley did not list David, Mandy or William as children of Jackson Blakley on her application for soldier's pension. The children list and birth dates was certified by a local doctor. It is possible that David was the child of some deceased family member and taken in by Mary at a young age. He may have believed the other children to be siblings when they were actually cousins. Amandy and William Blakley are listed as children of Jackson E. Blakley (son of William S. Blakley) on the 1900 census however their birth years are shown as 1897 and 1883 and are much younger than David. The 1870 census shows Cobbin, a 5 year old male that has not been found on later census.
