Jonathan Robert Golden was the son of Willis W. and Margaret McCann Golden. His father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Ireland. He had two brothers, James M. and Rev. John B. Golden.

Jonathan married Hester Jane Preston in 1845 in Harrison County, VA. They had ten children: James, George W., William Porter, Jedediah Waldo, James Flavius, Sarah J., Charles Albert, Wilson B., Margaret S., and Susan Hester Golden.

After the death of Hester Jane in 1863, he married Martha Ann Columbia Martin. They had five children: Emma S., Harmon Arlow, John Robert, Mary R., and Emmet Wayland Golden.

He migrated from West Virginia to Knox County, Missouri in the late 1860's along with other Harmony Grove families (i.e. Coffmans, Bufords, Lucks, Carders, etc.). They seemingly used river routes (Ohio River, Mississippi, etc.)for transportation.

Jonathan was a farmer by trade and was of the Baptist faith.
