During World War II, Claude was a sailor on the U.S.S. Neosho. It was attacked in the Battle of the Coral Sea, May 7-8, 1942. Afterward, 68 surviving men, including Claude, lashed together rafts and floated away from what they thought was the sinking Neosho; it was sunk days later by American sailors, not wanting the ship to be found. For the next nine days they were adrift without food or water; Claude died during that time. Only four men were alive by the time the raft was discovered, and of the four men rescued, only two survived.
