OLD ARMY SURGEON CALLED BY DEATH
Dr. John Lawrence Eby, for the past twenty-five years a respected resident of Santa Cruz and a soldier who served with distinction as a surgeon in the army during the War of the Rebellion, is no more, his death having occurred on Saturday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. S. E. Stubbs, 95 Windsor Street. Dr. Eby had reached the ripe old age of eighty-six years and apparently was enjoying fairly good health until three weeks ago, when he sustained a bad fall, the shock of which proved the direct cause of his passing. Dr. Eby was a gentleman of character, well read and possessed of a fund of reminiscences of the old days, some of which brought him in close touch with Abraham Lincoln, both as a friend and in other affairs that pertained to business dealings of a personal nature. Dr. Eby had many friends in Santa Cruz, and has always been active in church life as well as taking much interest in the G.A.R., of which he was a member.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 o’clock, from the Chase undertaking parlors. The deceased was a native of Ohio and had eighty six years of age.

John married Harriet A. Riley, 8 Aug 1858, Logan County, Illinois. Harriet died 25 Jun 1916, Santa Cruz County, California.
