James Newman Cruit is the second son of Henry Edmund Cruit and Lydia Jane Truitt. He married Blanch C. Shewmake in 1919. Together they had the following children: Homer Cruit and Marjorie Cruit. Blanch died on 25 Mar 1923 from a tragic accidental fire in a cook stove. Marjorie was raised by her grand parents: Samuel and Martha Shewmake. James Newman Cruit married Julia Huffstutler on 30 May 1924. Together they had Kenneth E. Cruit, Pauline F. Cruit, Thomas & John Cruit (twins), Ruby & Ralph E. Cruit (Twins). Pauline died in 1926 at the age of 1 year and Kenneth E. Cruit passed away on 15 Mar 1931 in Rose, Shelby, Illinois.

James served in World War 1 and suffered from exposure from gas. He served in France during WWI. His military marker mentions that he served with the Mechanic Company H. 130 Infantry during WWI.

"James M. Cruitt Dies; Services Held Saturday

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lockart and Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville for James M. Cruitt, 77, of Shelbyville.

Interment was in Bethel Cemetery near Findlay.

Mr. Cruitt died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday in the Shelby County Memorial Hosp.

He was born in Okaw Township in Shelby County. He married Blanche Shewmake in 1919. She preceded him in death in 1923. On May 30, 1924 he married Julia Huffstutler, who died Oct. 16, 1965.

Survivors include sons, John of Minneapolis, Minn., Ralph of Salem, Homer of Shelbyville; daughters, Mrs. Faye Kingston and Mrs. Ruby Phelps, both of Shelbyville, Mrs. Helen Kearney of Lovington, Mrs. Marjorie Brooks of Findlay.

Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Lula Maxwell of Cooper City, Fla.; halfbrother, Lester Kingston of Shelbyville; and 20 grandchildren."
