Joseph A. Lis Sr., 64, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born August 15, 1946, in Somerville, N.J.


He played professional baseball from 1964 to 1979, playing with four Major League teams including the Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, and the Seattle Mariners. He finished his baseball career with the Triple A Champion, Evansville Triplets. He coached youth baseball for over 30 years, including Newburgh American Legion from 1984-2002. In 2003, he became General Manager of the Evansville Wolfepack 18 year old travel team.


Joe enjoyed golf, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He owned and operated the Joe Lis Baseball School since 1991, and also worked at James R. Pyle Insurance Agency since 1989.


Joe was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. 


He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anna Lis.


Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Lis of Newburgh; sons, Joe Lis, Jr. (Lana), and Jim Lis (Kim); daughter, Rebecca Lis, all of Newburgh; grandchildren, Lauren Lis, Ashley Lis, Jenna Lis, Kenny Butler, Jaclyn Lis, Kris Butler, and Landin Lis.


A Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2010, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Road, Newburgh, IN, officiated by Rev. Joseph Ziliak with entombment at Sunset Memorial Park.


Friends may visit Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, Newburgh, IN, and 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.
