She was the wife of James Francis Adams, Sr. (1908-1971).
Ruth and son James Jr., both of 36 Read St., Seaford, Sussex Co., DE, died of smoke inhalation in a Hughson, CA fire.
The two were paying a Christmas visit to Ruth's daughter Francine Gasper, of Hughson, and Francine's two children, Andrea, 9, and Tommy, 7.
The fire apparently started when the television set in the family room shorted out.
Francine was awakened by screams, grabbed Tommy and pushed him out through a rear window, then got out herself. She ran to the front of the house, but the flames and heat were too intense for her to attempt to rescue her mother, brother, and daughter.
Ruth and James were overcome by smoke in the dining room, as they tried to call the fire department. Andrea had waited for her grandmother and uncle, instead of fleeing the burning house, and died of smoke inhalation a few feet from the front door.
A Seaford friend, Mrs. Ann Filer, made arrangements for the double funeral of Ruth and James, which was held in Our Lady of Lourdes R. C. Church, Stein Highway, Seaford.
Besides her daughter and grandson, Ruth was survived by four sisters, Kathleen Sisco, Florence Davison, Jeanne Davison, and Miss Margaret Creamer.
