Raymond D. Howerton, 75, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at his home in Muskogee. He was born April 17, 1932 in Haskell, Oklahoma, the son of Hugh and Louise (Damme) Howerton. Raymond grew up on the family farm west of Haskell. He attended school at Marshall until the fourth grade when he transferred to Haskell schools. He was educated at Twin Hill from ninth grade until he graduated in 1951. After high school he joined the U. S. Army and served two years. On November 1, 1952, Raymond and Bonnie Goodall married. He returned to Haskell after serving in the Army and attended Okmulgee Tech where he received a degree in Drafting. He worked as a draftsman for a couple of years and then went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in 1959 as an inspector. He retired in 1993. Raymond and Bonnie moved to Muskogee in 2004. They were longtime members of First United Methodist Church in Haskell and in 2006 they joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. Raymond and Bonnie enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Muskogee Twirlers over 30 years. He loved to play Dominoes and found it to be a wonderful way to socialize. He loved his garden, volunteered at Honor Heights Garden of Lights and Azalea Garden. Mr. Howerton was a member of Haskell Masonic Lodge and belonged to the Bedouin Shrine. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Doyle, Hubert, and John; two sisters Norma Jean and Ganelle and grandson, Joshua. He was also preceded by his wife, Bonnie, on October 22, 2007.Raymond is survived by one daughter, Regina Brower and husband Paul of Abilene, TX; one son, Sam Howerton and wife Kim of Liberty Mounds, OK; three grandchildren, Jason Brower and wife Kristen of Houston, TX, Matt Brower and wife Rachel of Austin, TX, Samantha Jackson and husband Jacob of Liberty Mounds, OK; three great grandchildren, Lilly Brower of Houston, Finley Brower of Austin and Hattie Brower of Houston; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Joan Howerton of Tucson, AZ and Alvin and Stephanie Howerton of Tulsa and two sisters, Nina McCabe of Haskell and Geneva Martin of Tulsa.Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Foster-Petering Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Kevin Tully officiating. Interment will follow in Haskell City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Pete Damme, Herman Ray, Eldon Stone, Howard Harbison, Vernon Ridley and Alfred Flusche.
