Sports Figure. The founder of Little League Baseball. The first of his family to graduate from high school, he was employed as manager of a local soft-drink bottling plant. During the fall of 1938, he experimented with the distance between bases and designed a scaled-down baseball diamond for his two nephews to play ball. In 1939 he established the game of Little League in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with three teams. From 1939 to 1950 he voluntarily traveled throughout the United States explaining the program and enlisting others to start leagues in their hometowns. Little League Baseball expanded rapidly and in January, 1950, a corporation was formed to handle the administration of the many leagues. He was President and Commissioner of this corporation from 1950 to 1955, still traveling throughout the US, Europe, England and North Africa. Little League baseball is known throughout the world and played in many countries today.
