Sandra Rae Baird Howells

1962 - 2024

Sandra Rae Baird Howells, the much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and cousin, slipped the bonds of this earthly existence on Saturday evening, March 2nd, 2024, victorious after a two-year battle with cancer, finally free to explore the wonders of eternity. She died at home in Herriman, Utah, surrounded by her loving husband, children, and other family members.

Sandra was born in Murray, Utah, on September 29th, 1962, the fifth child in a family of seven of Alan and Priscilla Baird. Her early childhood was spent in Pleasant Grove, Utah. In 1971, the family moved to the great state of Texas where they lived in both Fort Worth and Arlington. Sandra had the unique experience of living for a few years on the grounds of the Federal Correctional Institution, a prison where her father served as an Associate Warden!

Sandra graduated from Arlington High School, and then attended Brigham Young University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics. While a student at BYU, Sandra enjoyed a semester abroad in London, England. She also served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Melbourne, Australia. Always a lifelong learner, Sandra just recently completed all the core coursework toward a doctorate in the ancient Chinese art of Medical Qigong under the tutelage of Dr. Tony D'Angelo, of Chicago, Illinois.

She met Roger Howells and they were married in December of 1986. Roger and Sandra always wanted a big family and were blessed to have three children, Oliver, Brialan, and Kenzie. After many years, Sandra and Roger chose to expand their family again, this time through adoption. They adopted three children from Colombia. The family was made complete with Andrea, Diana, and Diego. Sandra was the proud grandmother of nine.

After their marriage, Roger and Sandra lived first in Provo with their two oldest, then had the privilege of moving to the Hague in the Netherlands for four years, where their daughter Kenzie was born. The young family took full advantage of their years in Europe by traveling widely across the continent. Over the years, the family relocated to Littleton, Colorado, to Laie Hawaii, and finally, to Draper, Utah, and then built a home in West Mountain, Utah. Sandra worked hard at whatever she put her mind to. For seven years, Sandra and Roger lived on their farm in West Mountain, near Payson, where she traded exotic foreign locales for milking cows and raising chickens!

After they became empty-nesters, Sandra and Roger moved to their house in Herriman, where once again, Sandra enjoyed putting her considerable interior design skills to use. She loved to travel and collect beautiful things. Her home was filled with carefully selected pottery and art from their travels in Europe, South America, and Japan. As recently as this past November, Sandra and Roger spent three weeks in Spain which included attending a special nine-day workshop studying the Art of the Gong and came home with a marvelous collection of brass instruments in different sizes and tones.

Family was always important to Sandra. Not only was she close to her six siblings, but she was also close to a large extended family on both sides of the family. She was one of 42 first cousins on her maternal Boswell family side and one of 34 cousins among her father's Baird family. Reunions and gatherings with extended family were always a priority. Roger came from a family of seven children, and Sandra was equally close to her Howells in-laws. In fact, her brother, Cris, married her husband Roger's sister, Janae, so their children are double cousins.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Alan and Priscilla Baird; and her older brother, Bryan Baird. She is survived by her husband, Roger; son, Oliver Howells, and his wife, Natalie, with their two sons, William and Wesley; daughter, Brialan, and her husband, Brett Gunter, with their three children, Ryder, Elise and Ember; daughter, Andrea Howells, with her four children, Parker, Amarra, Benjamin, and Sacoya; daughter, Kenzie Howells; daughter, Diana Howells; and son, Diego Howells.
