Obituary for Geraldine May Balke


Geraldine May Balke, 100, of Fort Dodge, passed away, peacefully, on Thursday, March 6, 2024, at Grandview Care Center, Dayton, IA.


Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2024, at Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.


Surviving children are Carolyn (Stan) Rogers of Warsaw, MO, Roger (Lucy) Balke of Ft. Dodge, IA, and Stan (Francie) Balke of Eugene, MO. She also is survived by 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 12 great great-grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews as well as a host of friends. She is survived by sisters, Lillian King (Sedalia, MO), Judy Naylor (Sedalia, MO), Marcella Schedler (North Carolina), and brothers, Kenneth Bergman (Lee Summit, MO) and Gilbert Bergman (Tempe, AZ).


Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, Christian & Esther Bergman; brothers, Reuben, Orville, and Lowell; husband Kenneth; son, Larry (Merna) Balke, daughter Cindy (Terry) Elliott, and great-grandson, Christian Thompson.


Geraldine May Bergman, the oldest of 10 children, was born on May 28, 1923, to Christian & Esther Bergman (Borchers) Mora, Missouri. She graduated from High School. On June 14, 1942, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Balke in Sedalia, MO.


The family moved from Missouri to Des Moines in 1956, then to Fort Dodge in 1968. While raising the family, Gerry enjoyed gardening, crocheting, baking, crossword puzzles, and playing cards. After raising their children, Gerry worked for the school lunch program at Arey school for several years until her retirement in 1991.


She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. If she was not able to make it to the services in her later years, she would be sure to watch the re-broadcast on TV. She was dedicated to her daily Devotional and Bible reading.


Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
