Levi Harris born in Muskingum county, Ohio, and removed to Athens county with his parents when a boy, being there reared and married to Miss Catherine (Erwin). His wife died in 1862 and in the spring of 1864 he came to Iowa, locating in Jasper county in the fall of that year, and being joined here by his son and two daughters.

Levi, was married a second time, in July, 1865, to Mrs. Mary Newhouse, the widow of Jonathan Newhouse, who was formerly Miss Mary Dickey. He resided on the farm in Jasper county until his death, which occurred when he had reached the age of seventy-three years.

He gave his political support to the republican party, and was unassuming and retiring in his daily life, being entirely free from ostentation or display, and thereby winning the respect and kindly regard of everyone with whom he came in contact. Unto him and his first wife were born four children: Thomas Henderson Harris, Mary (wif of Robert Dollarheid of Oregon), Margaret (wife of William Longcor of Greencastle), and Israel Freemont Harris.
