Mrs. Schaefer, 91, of Rochester, died Sunday (May 4, 2008) at Samaritan Bethany Heights.
Barbara Rose Messer was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Richardton, N.D. She moved to Bowman, N.D., as a young child. In 1935, during the Great Depression, she came to Rochester from Bowman to work at Saint Marys Hospital. She later worked as an elevator operator at the Kahler Hotel. On June 8, 1938, she married Harold Schaefer at St. John's Catholic Church in Rochester. Her husband was an IBM employee; he preceded her in death in February 1997. Mrs. Schaefer was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women, an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and a former member of the St. James CCW Group.
Survivors include four sons, Terry (Mary Ann) of Rochester, Bruce (Sandy) of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Michael (Cindy) and Thomas (Lynn), both of Rochester; four daughters, Rosie (Paul) Toogood of Stewartville, Mary Hoover, Patricia (Scott) Heck and Cindy (Steven) Shones, all of Rochester; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Anne Louden of Harrah, Wash., and Hilda Scott, of Yakima, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Lourdes Foundation or the St. Pius Building Fund.
