Ernest (Ernie) Carl Milberger

YAKIMA - Ernest (Ernie) Carl Milberger had three great loves in his life - his wife Betty, his children, and "playing" with chemistry. A devoted family man and noted scientist in his field, Ernie passed away May 2 after a long illness.

He was born on the western plains of Kansas, the fifth child of eight in a family of "Volga Deutsch," Germans who immigrated from Russia early in the 20th Century. When he was three, his father moved the growing family to Kansas City, where the children could receive a better education.

Ernie excelled in school, and received a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Missouri. He returned for a Master's degree in Chemistry.

While in graduate school he met his future wife, Betty Jean Neal, in Columbia, Missouri. They married in 1945. The first two years of their marriage they were separated, while Ernie did strategic war work and Betty completed nursing training. In 1947 they moved to Cleveland, where Ernie worked for Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) by day and attended graduate school at Western Reserve University by night. He received his doctorate in chemistry, and continued to work for Sohio as a research chemist for 39 years.

Ernie and Betty raised two children, Marilyn and Mark. He shared his love of literature with Marilyn, and took great pride in watching Mark develop his talent in photography. He cherished the time he could spend traveling with his family, and continued to explore the world until his last illness.

Ernie loved classical music and poetry, and to the end of his life he could recite poems by Browning, Keats, and Coleridge that he learned by heart in the eighth grade. He retired in 1985, and he and Betty enjoyed years of world travel and volunteer community work. He was a devoted scholar of the Bible and biblical archaeology, and a member of the United Methodist Church.

In 1993, he and Betty moved to Yakima to be near Betty's sister, Helen Jewett. He loved the mountains and landscapes of the west, and was only sorry that Parkinson's disease limited the time he had to enjoy them. He is survived by his wife Betty, their children Marilyn Milberger of Seattle and Mark Milberger of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; his granddaughter Amy; and his siblings Don Milberger, Nora Goodman, and Eden Fox.

Ernie's funeral will be May 6 at 2 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 14 N. 48th Avenue, Yakima. A viewing will be held on Monday at Keith & Keith Memorial Home at 902 West Yakima Avenue from 4-8 p.m. He will be buried in Terrace Heights Cemetery in Yakima, Washington.
