Thomas Berton, 58

BOARDMAN – Thomas Berton, 58, of Boardman, passed away at 6 a.m. Sunday from cardiac arrest after a short illness.

Mr. Berton was born Feb. 23, 1948 in Salem, the son of Clarence and Laura Gibson Berton.

Tom was employed by Dave Sugar Excavating for 30 years. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Springfield. He was a decorated U.S. Marine and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW of American Legion No. 2799 Triangle Post of New Springfield.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married Sept. 1, 1973. Other survivors include his parents two daughters, a sister of Petersburg; a brother South Carolina; and two grandchildren. *(now three)

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, where services will be at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Frank Podolinsky officiating.

Burial will be at Petersburg Cemetery.

He also left two faithful and loving dogs - "Harley" and "Hoser". Sadly, "Harley", aged 7 died unexpectidly a few weeks after his master. "Harley's" ashes are to be scattered on the grave of his master. "Hoser" was adopted with Harley as young pups - Hoser was named after Frank Lyda, a fellow worker, who died of cancer suddenly May 22, 1999. His faithful dog "Hoser" lived on with the family and died August 2013 His remains were buried at the family cottage in Naples Florida.
