George Hoover, a farmer and stockman of Jackson Township, was born in Davidson County, N.C., September 11, 1832, and in 1835 came to Missouri with his mother, Sarah (Goss) Hoover, his father, Felix Hoover, having died in Tennessee on the way. Both were North Carolinians. George and his mother located in Greene County, and about 1840 moved to what is now Webster County, taking up their abode near the farm on which George now resides. In these two counties are subject grew to manhood, but was married in the latter county to Miss Sarah F. Pipkin, their marriage being celebrated on the 3rd of July, 1860. She was born and reared in Greene County, Mo., and is a daughter of Lewis Pipkin, who was formerly from Tennessee, and was one of the early settlers of Greene County. Since his marriage Mr. Hoover has resided on his present farm, and is the owner of about 350 acres of fertile land, about 200 acres of which are cleared, and furnished with a large, two-story frame residence, a good frame barn and other out-buildings, and an orchard of 200 trees. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and he is a Master Mason in the Masonic order. Their children’s names are as follows: Louis F., who is married and resides near his parents; Jane, wife of Dr. Highfill, of Mansfield, whose sketch appears in this work; Christina, Mary, Samuel C., George W., Maud Elizabeth and Johnny (who is seven years of age). Four children died in infancy; Margaret Alice died at the age of two years; Robert Franklin died in 1885, aged twenty-three years, and Sarah F. also died that year, at the age of nineteen years.
