Dr. William E Franke practiced medicine in Newton and Jasper County, IL for over 55 years.

He was the youngest of 10 children of Dr. John Gerhard and Gertrude Fischer Franke. He graduated from Newton High School in 1885 and later attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and Physicians and Surgeons College in St. Louis, Mo.

In 1892, he joined his eldest brother, Dr. Adam A Franke, in medical practice in Newton. Their office was in the Franke building, west side of the square, where, after Dr. Adams's death in 1912, Dr. Will continued until the late forties. Then, although officially retired, he continued to treat many of his older patients in his home.

On Sept. 25, 1893, he and Anna Fisher, daughter of Capt. Neil and Anna McGill Fisher of Newton, were married in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton. The couple had four sons, Florent, Neil, William and Adam, and two daughters, Gertrude and Anna.

Dr. and Mrs. Franke were both lifelong members of St. Thomas Church and members of its holy Name society. He was a member of the Jasper Co. Tuberculosis Board, the Jasper Co. and Illinois State medical societies and a charter member of Newton Council Knights of Columbus.

Dr. Franke died in a Springfield hospital.
