AUNT MAG O'NEAL TAKEN BY DEATH AT NiNETY YEARS
Funeral services were held Saturday for Mrs. Margaret Delphine O'Neal, 90, one of the county's oldest and best known citizens.
Known as 'Aunt Mag,' she lived in the Bonnie Chapel home of a granddaughter, Mrs. R B Keith. Death came at 5:15 p m last Thursday at Biloxi Hospital, where she had been for a week following a stroke.
Born at Bonnie Chapel, March 26, 1865, Aunt Mag was the daughter of George and Martha Byrd.
Her father was one of the county's largest landowners and a founder of New Prospect Campground. He cut the first sapling for the tents and lighted the first fire at the camp.
Aunt Mag herself missed only a few camp meetings from the beginning. She attended this year and sat in the second row in front of the altar, where she had sat at the first meeting 75 years ago.
She lived in the old family home until 22 months ago, when her health no longer would allow her to live alone. She was a member of Bonnie Chapel Methodist Church and for many years had taught Sunday school.
Surviving are five sons, M B O'Neal of Saucier, J B and W M of Rt 1 Ocean Springs, Dempsey of Pascagoula and P H of Gulfport; two daughters, Mesdames Bertha Williams of Vancleave and O J Santa Cruz of Biloxi; 24 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Bonnie Chapel Church with pastor the Rev Brooks Allen officiating, assisted by a former pastor, the Rev Lloyd Harding of Biloxi. Interment was in Byrd Cemetery at Bonnie Chapel.
Pallbearers were grandsons Wade, Dennis, Rupert and J T O'Neal and Ulmer and Eugene Wilson.
