At one time he kept a hotel in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas.
Fought in the Civil war with the Confederate Army. Company B, 6th Texas Calvary.
He is listed as one of the early settlers of Rockwall County. The booklet published by Rockwall for it's centennial states "J. P. Dent, a bachelor who adopted and reared Tul Dent". I found that his wife (Francis) was living with and adopted son in Rockwall in 1900 (named "Mascor"), while John P. Dent was a "visitor" in the home of William W. Dent.
Headstone is engraved: "Asleep in Jesus peacefully....."
