Samuel H. Hill was likely born right after the August 1850 census was taken in Montgomery, Illinois. He lived in Greenville, Bond, Illinois in 1860 and Elm Point, Bond, Illinois in 1870. Samuel married Sarah M. Swain on February 26, 1874 in Montgomery, Illinois. They then moved to Cottonwood, Bond, Illinois by 1880 and in 1881, their one and only daughter Gertrude D. Hill is born there. Then after Samuel's parents die and Sarah's parents pass away, it appears that the both of them and Gertrude move to Centerville, Linn, Kansas by 1895. We find them on the 1900 census in Centerville and Gertrude is 19 years old on this census. Then on Sep. 2, 1904, Samuel H. Hill transfers real estate to his daughter Gertrude worth $2000; a lot of money then - Centerville Township (La Cygne Journal of KS). On Friday, Jan. 20, 1905, Samuel conducts a huge public auction of livestock, farm implements, etc. (Also La Cygne Journal). Some believe that it is possible that Samuel and Sarah divorced, as the result of a Hill vs. Hill divorce in a Mound City newspaper, but this Hill vs. Hill may belong to a Sarah E. Hill vs. a James E. Hill in 1904. It is actually more likely that Sarah M. Swain Hill died before the estate transfer to Gertrude on Sep of 1904. On the 1920 census in Centerville, Samuel H. Hill lists himself as a widow and a farmer. He was living alone. He did have a sister; Mary Elizabeth Hill Harrison, who lived in Middletown, Wilson, Kansas about 78 miles away. She died in 1903. His other sister Francis died in 1927 in Carrollton, Missouri. His sister Mariah Hill Bishop died in Indiana in 1917. His sister Lizzie Hill Compton died in 1881 in Montgomery, Illinois. He had only one brother Joseph Hill who committed suicide by gunshot in 1895 in Illinois.

At some point after his daughter Gertrude Hill Horn also kills herself by gunshot in 1925, it appears that Samuel H. Hill moves to California. He can be found on a 1931 directory record in Pomona, CA living behind the same residence that his son-in-law was living; Holt Avenue. It is a possibility that he is buried in the same cemetery as Charles Horn and his 2nd wife; Zepha Smith. We do know now that it is likely that Zepha Smith's mother Hattie Greenwood is buried in the same cemetery in 1932. Further research needed on Samuel. Will update biography later.
