Melancholy.

"In the midst of the exulting circumstances which surround us to-day, it is more than paiful to record the death of our amiable young friend Mr. George W. Shannon, nephew and private secretary to the governor of Ohio. Mr. Shannon, we re informed, expired last evening, after suffering for several weeks with a severe disease of the lungs. His interment will take place to-morrow, (Sunday,) at 9 o'clock, from the residence of Doctor Schenck.

"Mr. Shannon was young. He had just reached the age of manhood, and, with a pure heart and generous spirit, he was picturing to himself a wide career of fame and usefulness, when the scythe of the grand destroyer swept him from existence. The blow has fallen with tenfold severity upon the head of his father, the Hon. Thomas Shannon, Senator from Belmont county. His cup of domestic affliction has been filled to overflowing."
