Elsie Evelyn Granger, 86, a long time resident of Leavenworth, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Highline Care Center in East Wenatchee. She was born on November 18, 1921, to William and Mildred (Miller) Malone in Wenatchee, where she was raised and educated, graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1940. As a young girl, Elsie loved spending her summers with her grandparents on Blewett Pass. On March 7, 1942, Elsie married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Granger in Seattle. While Dick was serving his country, Elsie made her home on Peshastin Creek. In 1949, the couple moved to Leavenworth, where they raised their three sons and were very active in the community. Elsie served many years as den mother for the Cub Scouts and running the Little League baseball program, having a field named after her for her dedication. She organized the Kid's Parade for the VFW Auxiliary for 33 years, which was simply known as a "back to school parade" before the Autumn Leaf Festival. Elsie was named Grand Marshal of the 22nd Autumn Leaf Festival in 1985. She also organized the Festival Hootenanny for 19 years and was very much involved in the construction of the Autumn Leaf floats. Elsie was secretary-treasurer for the VFW Auxiliary #10445 for more than 30 years and served as president for three years. She was a very dedicated member of the Chumstick Grange #819 of Leavenworth and of the Washington State and National Grange for many years. Elsie loved scrapbooking, crossword puzzles, serving her family and community and helping others in any way she could. She was always quick to lend a hand and help the other residents at Highline Care Center, where she had lived for the past four months. Elsie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sharon Granger of Wenatchee, Thomas and Kate Granger of Leavenworth and James Granger of Peshastin; sisters, Dorothy Ransdell and Geraldine (Ron) Sollinger, both of Wenatchee; four grandchildren, Keith and his wife, Shelley Granger of Wenatchee, Brian Granger of San Diego, CA, Ben Granger of Peshastin and Chelsea Granger of Portland, OR; two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Olivia Granger of Wenatchee; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; one sister, Helen Hampton; one brother, Aaron Malone; and a grandson, Jason Granger. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Elsie Granger will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2008, in the Ward's Funeral Chapel with Pastor Roger Hudson officiating. The Service will conclude in the Chapel, with Private Burial in the Mt. View Cemetery. Ward's Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
