Levi was the son of William H. and Elizabeth Maxwell Elston. He was one of nine known children including: Neta Jane, Thomas M., Matilda B., Allen, William Harrison, Jasper Joseph, Levi Scott, Elizabeth, and John. He was born when the family lived in Newcastle, Henry County, KY.

On December 24, 1846, he married Martha Gray. They had one daughter who died at birth. Martha died in 1854.

On February 28, 1855, he married Elizabeth Jane Irwin in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky.

After the couple moved to Knox County, MO, the couple had six children: Willis Frank, Francis, Minnie, Charles Levi, Ben J., and Arthur Eldon.

Levi was first a tailor and then a farmer by trade.

According to his death notice in the Weekly Graphic newspaper, Kirksville, Missouri, February 7, 1896, Levi was one of the first settlers in Knox County, MO.
