He was murdered by George Horace Congdon over a dispute of the fact that George had shot the collie dog that belonged to William J. Thurston and then shot William with one round in an argument. George Horace Congdon was arrested on the spot for murder and plead not guilty until time of trial. Four days before trial he plead guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to no less than 25 years and no more than 30 years of hard labor at the New Hampshire State Prison. On September 15, 1933 (5 1/2 years later) he was granted a pardon by the Governor of New Hampshire.
