As an athletic standout at Sheffield High School Dr. Crowson played baseball, football, and basketball. Although he was an outstanding baseball prospect and was offered contracts to play professionally, his true passion was football. He received numerous football awards including the Grogan Trophy for most outstanding Tri-Cities football player. Dr. Crowson was awarded one of the first scholarships from the area to the University of Tennessee playing tailback for the Volunteers under General Neyland. He lettered on the 1951 National Championship team and remained an active Volunteer for life. He was inducted into the Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.


Dr. Crowson graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1957 and entered the U.S. Army as a Captain in 1958. He served in Germany both as a Battalion Surgeon and Ward Officer of Obstetrics until 1961. As Chief Resident he completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at Vanderbilt University Hospital in 1965.


Dr. Crowson spent 29 years in private practice in Huntsville, AL where he was appointed Chief of the OB-GYN Division at Huntsville Hospital. He was President of the Madison County Medical Society and also served as a member of the Executive Committee.


Upon retirement the couple moved to Knoxville, TN and joined The Episcopal Church of the Ascension where Dr. Crowson was involved with numerous ministries. He was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew and deeply treasured the friendships he made there. He was an usher, a Eucharistic Minister, a Stephen Minister, and an avid supporter of the FISH Hospitality Pantries.


After several years of retirement Dr. Crowson returned to the medical field to conduct physicals for the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Knoxville. He enjoyed his role in the induction process and valued his friendships and interactions with colleagues and patients alike.


Dr. Crowson was very proud of his heritage. The Crowson family, who originally settled in Wears Valley, TN, received the distinguished status as First Family of Tennessee as well as the status of First Family of Alabama.


Dr. Crowson will be remembered as a loving husband and father who valued family above all. He will remain in their hearts forever.
