On May 1, 2008, the loving angel and matriarch of our family, Thelma Erycle Haynes Hammack, 93, of St. Albans, passed in peace to return home to the Lord and reunite with her husband and family that she lost so long ago, including her grandson, Charles E. Bryant Jr., who passed away March 27, 1965.

Born August 15, 1914, to Virgil and Mary Katherine Jones Haynes, Thelma was the oldest of five children, Clifton Earl "Butch" Haynes, Elmer Arden "Tug" Haynes, Georgia Sybil Haynes Quay, and Maxine Beatrice Haynes McCallister, who all preceded her in death.

She and her husband, Arthur Ray "Skip" Hammack, who wed December 24, 1935, were together until his death on January 21, 1977. They enjoyed riding horses and running stables together, as well as putting on dinners at the Eagles Club, where Skip was a member. Thelma's cooking and dinners that she put on were always something she loved to do. She owned and ran two restaurants and ran the Coonskin concession stands.

She was a Charleston High School student until her senior year, when she was asked to quit and help her family. During the Great Depression, she went to work at Kreskies Five and Dime Store.

Thelma never gave up her love for learning and pursued her dream of becoming a social worker and teacher. Graduating from Morris Harvey College with degree in hand, Thelma went to work for the Kanawha County Board of Education as a substitute teacher and social worker, where she retired in 1982 after 28 years of service. She continued to work and take care of family members until she was 86 years old.Thelma loved to help others and her social work allowed her to help the ones she cared for the most, the students she wanted to see succeed with an education no matter what.

Provider and homemaker, Thelma cared for her family until the end and will be greatly missed. Surviving our matriarch is her daughter, Martha R. Bryant, 63, of St. Albans; six grandchildren, William Brent Haynes, 46, of Houston, Texas, Melissa D., 42, and husband Mike "Pickle" West, 43, of Belle, Naticia Lynn Bryant, 41, of Charleston, Paul D. Bryant, 38, of Charleston, Kristen R. Bryant, 36, and fiancée Amanda Linville, 44, of South Charleston, and Michael S. Bryant, 31, and fiancée Amanda Woods, 30, of St. Albans; and special friend and granddaughter, Teressa A. Kincaid, 34, also of St. Albans; seven great-grandchildren, Michael Christopher Bryant, 19, and Paul Matthew Bryant, 15, of Belle, John Stephen Paxton, 17, and Erica Lee Paxton, 14, of Belle, Cory Alan Bryant, 12, Sydni Nichole Bryant, 11, and Amber Dawn Bryant, 9, of St. Albans; niece and nephew, Joycelyn G. and husband B.L. McGraner and Clifton E. Haynes Jr.; and a very special and longtime friend, Betty June Montgomery of Sissonville.

Special thanks to Johnson-Harding Funeral Home, who in our time of need, helped guide and console us.Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Johnson-Harding Funeral Home in Kanawha City. Another viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the service beginning at 12 p.m. Thelma will be laid to rest after a graveside service at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens in Cross Lanes.

Her favorite poem was:
This Moment Anonymous I may never see tomorrow There's no written guarantee, And things that happened yesterday Belong to history.I cannot predict the future,I cannot change the past.I have just the present moment,I must treat it as my last.I must use this moment wisely For it soon will pass away,And be lost to me forever As a part of yesterday.I must exercise compassion Help the fallen to their feet,Be a friend unto the friendless Make an empty life complete. The unkind things I do today May never be undone. And friendships that I fail to win May nevermore be won.I may not have another chance On bended knees to pray And thank God with humble heart,For giving me this day.
