He was the son of Elmer Morton and Lillie May (Burdine) Patterson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Rose Mary Tuder on November 24, 1948 in Greenwood, IN. He was a commercial insulator for Reilly Tar & Cemetery Co. for 16 years, retiring in 1989. He was a Boy Scouts troop 264 scoutmaster for several years until 1987, and was scout commissioner of Whetzel Trace district for 10 years, and was named Commissioner of the Year in 1984 and 1990. He was a member and 20 year elder of Greenwood Christian Church, and was involved with the church's scouting program for 30 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 258. In the 1980s, he compiled a book of poetry that was written by various members of the Patterson family. He was buried with full Military honors.
