U.S. Congressman, Mississippi Governor, U.S. Senator. Educated at Winchester Academy, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1792 and established his legal career in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was the commonwealth attorney of Rockingham County, (1793-97) and elected to the Fifth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving (1797-1809). Moving to Mississippi, he was elected as a Democrat the 1st Mississippi Governor, serving (1809-17) and after leaving office was appointed as a Jackson Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving (1820-25). In September 1825, he was reelected as the 5th Mississippi Governor, serving until he resigned from office due to illness on July 25, 1826. He then retired to his home state of Virginia, until his death.

HIS DEATH proved By the universal regret of all who knew him That he died without an enemy; HIS LIFE by his Stedfast honor & true Christian charity That he never deserved one.
