SAVOY – Bill McCabe, 94, of Savoy passed away peacefully on April 20, 2017.

William John Kleinheinz was born February 2, 1923, in Wausau, WI, the son of William Ernst Kleinheinz and Catherine Olive Mitchell. His father died when Bill was only 5-years-old. Several years later his mother married John Edward McCabe, who adopted Bill and his sister Joan. They resided in Green Bay, WI.

He married Eleanor Muriel Fisk on October 27, 1945, in Des Moines, IA. She survives. They were married for 71 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan F. (late, Michael) Wilson of Petersburg, IL, and Catherine E. (Boyd) Spencer of Austin, TX; and a son, William John McCabe, Jr. of La Jolla, CA; a brother, John Mitchell “Jack” (Nan) McCabe of Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren, Ryan K. Snyder, Champaign; Christy A. Wilson (Shawn) Von Talge and Scott M. (Allison) Wilson, both of Columbia, MO; Andrew W. Snyder, San Francisco, CA, John William “Jack” (Maren) McCabe, Seattle, WA; Marin M. McCabe (Mike) Mathien, Dover, NH; Kaela Terese McCabe, Lincoln, NE;11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, his precious sister Joan Catherine Kleinheinz McCabe Brawner, and his dear son-in-law Michael Kent Wilson.
Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. He had served as a Deacon.

He proudly served his country as a Second Lieutenant and an Army Ranger in WWII, 1942-46. Bill visited Washington, DC, as part of a Central Illinois Honor Flight, on Veteran’s Day, 2012. It was an unforgettable experience for him.

Bill attended St. Norbert College, De Pere, WI, prior to enlisting, and then earned his college degrees at the University of Iowa. He was an Educator, Coach and Mentor at Franklin College, Franklin, IN, from 1955-1962 and at Eastern Illinois University from 1962-1981. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Health, Men’s and Women’s Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) at E.I.U. from 1981 until his retirement in 1990. In 1964, he was named NAIA District 20 Baseball “Coach of the Year”. Also, in 1973, Bill was recognized by the NCAA Baseball Division, District Four as “Coach of the Year”. He was elected to the American Association of College Baseball Coaches (AACBC) “Hall of Fame” in 1977. And in 1988, he was elected as a Coach to the E.I.U. “Athletic Hall of Fame”. He had a very special relationship with all his players and fellow coaches throughout the years. He was a soft-spoken Coach who earned the respect and best efforts of his players. During summers in high school, he played baseball for the St. Louis Browns system.

Bill was a lifelong supporter and a one share stockholder of the NFL Green Bay Packers. He was a dedicated golfer and a great golf teacher to family and many others. He especially enjoyed playing rounds with family and friends in retirement at their second home in Glen Arbor, MI. They had many special times with special friends there. Bill was an avid photographer and his wonderful Michigan, Cape Cod and European travel photos and slides are legendary in the family.

He loved music and played the guitar, keyboard, and harmonica. Bill was also a great whistler and was always humming a tune.

A private, family Graveside Service and Interment will occur at Maple Grove Cemetery, Empire, MI, at a later time. He was an Organ Donor.
