Evelyn was born in Henderson, TN but moved to Texas at a young age. She became a school teacher in Ft. Worth, and married Leslie Thomas Mays. They lived with their in-laws until about 1920 when they moved to Houston. She was a Principal in the Ft. Worth Schools when she left. After her husband died in 1942, it is unknown where she lived or if she continued to teach. She died in Travis County, Austin, Texas in 1884.
