Amanda C. Houston was born in Madison County, Florida, and came to Grimes County, Texas with her family in 1858 when she was about ten. She was named after her cousin Amanda Cameron who came to Texas with the family and died in ca 1868 and is buried in Anderson, Grimes Co, Texas. She married Sam R. Mays in Grimes County after the war. They moved to Dallas in 1868 with the extended Mays family, but in 1884 moved to Crowley, Texas to be near her parents who lived in Enon, Tarrant County, Texas, where they lived until 1913 when they moved into the city of Ft. Worth. They lived on the south side of the city. She was the mother of 7 known children, the four listed below and three others who died young.
