Arranger/Composer, Professor of Information Systems, husband and father. Born in Cleveland, Ohio into a musical family, Art received his Bachelors in Music Theory and Composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Upon graduating, Art joined the U.S. Navy where he served in the 7th Fleet's Unit Band and then became the first black instructor at the Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C., teaching music theory, clarinet, saxophone, and flute. After his discharge from the Navy, Art received his Masters in Education from USC, and taught music and math at Griffith Junior High School in East Los Angeles. During the summers, though, he worked at Imperial and Liberty Records and eventually entered the entertainment industry full time For the next twenty years, Art worked as a producer, composer, arranger, consultant, copyist, and transcriber in not only the recording industry, but also television and movies. He worked with such diverse artists as Jermaine Jackson, Stanley Turentine, Johnny Mathis, Diahanne Carrol, and The Three Degrees, and on such TV shows as the Johnny Carson, Dinah Shore, and Merv Griffin shows. His list of movie credits include: Don't Leave Go My Hand, Checkered Flag or Crash, and The Odd Man. When computers became prominent in the entertainment field, Art returned to school at CSULA, graduating with his Bachelors in Computer Science. He became a full time instructor at Los Angeles Community College where he remained until his retirement in 2007. Services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 9:30 a.m., at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles.
