a. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the military of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
b. Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances described above, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star.
c. Awards may be made to recognize single acts of merit or meritorious service. The required achievement or service while of lesser degree than that required for the award of the Legion of Merit must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction.

Alphonse V. Etre, Sr. 50, of 12 Whitten Street, died yesterday in Doctor's Hospital.
Born in Worcester, he was the son of Simon and Antoinette (Renna) Etre.
Mr. Etre was the owner and operator of Etre's Auto Body Shop, 432 Franklin Street, for the last 28 years.
A World War II Veteran, he served with the Army in the European Theatre. He was awarded Two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star in the Italian Campaign. He was a member of the St. Joan of Arc Parish, Disabled American Veterans, Automobile Re-Builders Association, Worcester Lodge of Elks, and Worcester County Deputy Sheriff's Association.
He was a teacher and a drummer in the PNA Italian American Corps and the former Worcester Drum Corps.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary L. (Werstak) Etre; a son, Alphonse V. Etre, Jr.; four daughters, Mrs. Jacqueline A. Augusto, Ann L. wife of Kenneth Sullivan and the Misses Debra and Jean Etre, all of Worcester. Six brothers, Thomas A, Victor A, Joseph J and Rudolph V. Etre, all of Worcester and Albert P. and Sam G. Etre of Shrewsbury. A sister, Angela L, wife of Charles Negri of North Smithfield, R.I., five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Mercadante Funeral Home, 370 Plantation Street, with a Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 566 Lincoln Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
