Matilde Poulat was one of the leading silver artists of Mexico in the 20th century. A graduate of the famous Academy of San Carlos, Poulat was known for her exquisite work in silver jewelry, often employing pre Hispanic motifs with contemporary styles inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco. She started her own atelier in 1934 using the name "MATL', which is not only a play on her first name, but also the Aztec word for "water". The god Quetzalcoatl was also known as "Matl", which meant "hand" in Nahuatl. She died of a heart attack in her home in Mexico City. Never married and with no children, her nephew Ricardo Salas continued to produce her designs until his own death in 2006. Poulat was a classmate of Diego Rivera's at the Academy of San Carlos and her jewelry was loved by his wife, Frida Kahlo.
