Actress and fashion model. Elizabeth Threatt is considered to be one of the most perplexing women to ever appear on the silver screen. She achieved success as a model and as an actress in her twenties. Then, for reasons known only to her and to those close to her, she gave up a life of glamour, wealth and fame and moved to North Carolina where she worked in the textile mills. She married and later divorced Antoine DeContades, said to be a French nobleman, and was the mother of two children, a son Jean who died in 1977 and a daughter Rona. Threatt, known as Betty to her friends and family, captured the notice of moviegoers worldwide with her portrayal of Teal Eye, a Blackfoot Indian maiden, in the Howard Hawks movie "The Big Sky." Kirk Douglas starred in this movie which was filmed in Jackson Hole Wyoming, and released in 1952. "The Big Sky" was Elizabeth Threatt's only motion picture role, and she died at the age of 67 in relative obscurity. Although, her career was largely unknown by the people in Concord, her performance as Teal Eye won her many admirers worldwide. Fans still come to visit her grave and leave flowers and mementos. Why she ever left the fame and fortune of Hollywood behind her is a mystery as intriguing as her classic beauty, and, perhaps, one of the reasons her fame continues to grow years after her death.
