Pinney Takes Boys to Reform School

Probation officer Sam Pinney went to Marianna Wed morning to take three small boys to the reform school. All of the boys are white, among them being Clarence Metcalf, who is known to practically everybody in town as "Buckshot".

Clarence is back home with parents age 13 in Pensacola, FL in the January 1920 census, but arrested Mar 18 1921 for theft of a car.

Unfortunately he is a prisoner/inmate on the 1930 census, age 23. He was not yet married. There is a marriage record of Clarence A. Metcalf from Pensacola FL to Wilhelmina Dean from Pensacola on Aug 31 1931 in Florida. He stated on record it was his first marriage as did she. He was 26 and she was 21. I assume they divorced because he married again before 1935.

His 2nd wife Mary M. Byrd was still living at home with her son Elmore in Alabama in 1930. They married between before 1935 census in Florida.

He is at home in Pensacola with second wife Mary (Byrd) Metcalf and stepson Elmore in the 1935 Escambia Co. Florida census with no employment. Her son Elmore is 8 yrs old.

Clarence Alvin Metcalf married Mary Magdalene Byrd, the daughter of Margaret Caroline 'Callie' Byrd from Robertsdale, Baldwin Co. Alabama. He became stepfather to her son Elmore Byrd born 24 Sept 1925 in Alabama. Elmore's social security records indicated his father was Leonard Halstian and mother May Byrd, so he was an out of wedlock child. Clarence and first wife Mary had one daughter named Mary Magdaline Metcalf. Wife Mary died at age 33 on 18 Feb 1943 in Mobile, AL. I do not know if Clarence ever adopted her son Elmore but he lived out his life in Alabama as Elmore Byrd died as Elmore Byrd in Alabama.

Elmore Byrd b.24 Sept 1925 Alabama, stepson

Mary Magdalene Metcalf b. 1943 Florida (see 1950 census Pensacola, FL)

Clarence married May 5, 1943 in Etowah Co. AL Clara Audrey Strickland, the daughter of Arthur Monroe Strickland and Luthenia Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Stone from Lawrence Co. TN. 2nd wife Clara became stepmother to the infant Mary Magdalene Metcalf from his first wife who had just died.

Clarence and Audrey had no children of their own. They lived out their lives in Pensacola, FL, traveled together. One descendant said he had good memories of 'Uncle Buck', Audrey, her sister Lois, and their mother Lizzie sitting under a big willow tree every night talking about their days.
