Bruce Ferguson, the mail carrier, died between 10 and 11 oclock Thursday night at the family residence, 912 N. Church street. His death was caused by rheumatism of the heart. He was found dead by his wife when she awoke about midnight. Mr. Ferguson suffered a severe attack of rheumatism on July 29 and had to go to bed. He was confined to his bed for twelve weeks, but of late he had been steadily improving and was able to go about the city. He seemed to be gaining in strength every day, and on Wednesday he said he was feeling almost as well as ever. He had been given a six months leave of absence from the postoffice and after he became able to get around he took orders for a tea company. He was around as usual Thursday morning and seemed to be feeling well. After supper he said that one of his limbs felt a little tired and he went to bed. He did not complain any during the night. About midnight Mrs. Ferguson got up to get the baby some milk. It had been the custom of Mr. Ferguson to hold the baby while his wife got the milk and she called to him, but he did not answer. She went to him and found one of his feet out from under the over and she took hold of it and the foot was cold. Then she looked at his face and saw at once that he was dead. Hoping that something could be done she called her father and one of the neighbors and a physician was also summoned. The physician said that Mr. Fergusosn had probably died between 10 and 11 oclock. Mr. Ferguson had been under the care of the physican for the last nine months but for the greater part of the time he was able to get around and his death was wholly unexpected.
Bruce Ferguson would have been 40 years old May 14 next. He was in the employ of the Wabash as a fireman for a long time and gave up that positon to become a substitute mail carrier. After serving two years as a substitute carrier he was appointed as a regular carrier five years ago and would have received his star in July. He had expected to return to duty March 1.
Five years ago he was married to Miss Clara Shasteen. His wife and two children, Earl Edward and Ruth Melinda Ferguson, survive him. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Ryan of Minnesota, Mrs. Hamilton of California, Mrs. Bivans of Jerseyville and Miss Bertha Ferguson of Decatur. He was a meber of the Central church of Christ. He was a member of Decatur Camp No 144, M. W. of A. and also carried insurance in the Northwester.
The funeral will not be held before Sunday. The inquest was to be held at 4 pm Friday.
