Raymond Riddle fell victim to the great flu pandemic of 1919. His brother, Thomas, having just come home from serving in WW I, also died of influenza two days later. Adding to the family's loss, the boys' sister, Amanda, had died of influenza a month earlier. The monument was carved in Bedford, Indiana, and bought by the boys' grandmother, who paid $500 for it.
