Thomas Forest Riddle was a WW I veteran coming home 2 days before he died from the flu. It was said in his obituary that he had been shell shocked and that could have led to his weakened condition. His brother Raymond, who was not in the war, died two days before Thomas. Adding to the family's loss, the boys' sister, Amanda, also died of influenza a month earlier. The monument was carved in Bedford, Indiana, and bought by the boys' grandmother, who paid $500 for it.
