Enlisted as a Private at Mackford, Wisconsin on September 2, 1862 with Wisconsin's Company G, 1st Regiment, United States Volunteer Sharpshooters, "The Badger Scouts." The U.S.S.S. were elite marksman in the 2 Regiments raised for the Army of the Potomac, and fought with distinction throughout the Civil War.
He was a member of Company G until September 22nd, 1864 when he was transferred to Company D when his enlistment ran out and Company G mustered out of service. When Company D mustered out of service, hw eas transferred to Company A of the 2nd Regiment, and then to Company B, 36th Wisconsin infantry with the rest of Company G's veterans until they mustered out in 1865.
