Charles H. Gerhart Sr., 80, of 16 S. 24th St., Allentown, died Wednesday in Allentown Hospital. He was the husband of the late Bernice E. (Gabel) Gerhart.

He was a vice president of Merchants Bank, Allentown, before retiring in 1975 after 10 years of service. He previously worked for M.S. Young and Co., Allentown, for 33 years until retiring as general manager and secretary. In addition, he was an instructor in the American Institute of Banking and a part-time faculty member and adjunct professor at Northampton Community College.

Born in Perkasie, he was a son of the late Rev. Charles H. and Anita E. (Cordero) Gerhart.

A 1931 graduate of Muhlenberg College, Gerhart was among the first to receive the college's Alumni Achievement Award in May 1970. He received the award for making an eight-reel color movie of all phases of college activity, which was used for student recruitment at secondary schools and for development purposes.

Survivors: Son, Charles H. Jr. of Allentown; sister Marian, wife of Earl Leedecker of Wayne, Delaware County, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Anita B. in 1983.
