John, as he was often called, was the son of Howard Newton Moulton and Alice S. Shores Moulton. The couple separated soon after John's birth, and John was raised by his grandparents, Norman A. Shores and Flora B. Dunham Shores, in Sheffield, Berkshire Co.

John served as a pilot during World War II in the Army Air Corps' 4th Fighter Group. His rank was lieutenant. He was stationed in Debden, England, flying P-47s and P-51s. He was shot down in 1944 over Hanover, Germany but survived to become a prisoner of war in the Stalag Luft 1 camp for 13 months until liberation in 1945.

Upon returning from the war, he met the lovely Norma Reed, whom he married in 1946. They had a daughter and three sons.

John was a farmer in Sheffield.
