Alice E. Benner, 77, Bristol, a longtime resident, died July 26 at a Waldoboro nursing home. She was born in South Bristol, a daughter of Miles and Ella Kelsey Plummer, and attended schools there. Her husband Douglas R. Benner died in 1977. Mrs. Benner came to Bristol more than 50 years ago. In 1982, she moved to Damariscotta and lived at Salt Bay Apartments until becoming ill last month. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Benner was a foster parent for many children between World War II and the mid-1960's. Surviving are a daughter, Judy Woodman of Bristol, two sons, Norman L. of Newcastle and Chester E. of Bristol; five sisters, Jennie Gamage, Thelma Alley and Hazel Chapman, all of South Bristol and Beaulah Pitcher and Beatrice Rice, both of Damariscotta; three brothers, James Plummer of Bristol, Donald Plummer of Sheepscot and Douglas Plummer of Damariscotta; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Strong Funeral Home Chapel, Damariscotta. The Rev. John Nickerson officiated. Burial in Bristol Mills Cemetery, Bristol.
