Company F, 24th Connecticut Infantry-Civil War.

Charles H. Nichols of Clinton, Connecticut enlisted in Company F, Connecticut 24th Infantry Regiment on November 18, 1862. He mustered out on September 30, 1863 at Middletown, Connecticut. Sources: Connecticut Record of Service of Men during War of Rebellion.

Organized at Middletown and mustered in November 18, 1862. Left State for East New York November 18, thence sailed for New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., November 29, arriving there December 17. Attached to Grover's Division, Dept. of the Gulf, to January, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 19th Army Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, to July, 1863. Defences of New Orleans to August, 1863.

SERVICE.-Duty at Baton Rouge till March, 1863. Operations against Port Hudson March 7-27. Moved to Donaldsonville March 28. Operations in Western Louisiana April 9-May 14. Teche Campaign April 11-20. Irish Bend April 14. Bayou Vermillion April 17. Expedition to Alexandria and Simsport May 5-18. Destruction of Salt Works, near New Iberia, May 18. Moved to Bayou Sara, thence to Port Hudson, May 22-25. Siege of Port Hudson May 25-July 9. Assaults on Port Hudson May 27 and June 14. Surrender of Port Hudson July 9. Ordered to Plaquemine District July 11, and duty there till September. Mustered out September 30, 1863. Regiment lost during service 16 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 57 Enlisted men by disease. Total, 75. Source: CT 24th Inf Reg't.

Chico Record, Saturday Morning, October 19, 1907, pg 5 col 4: Charles H. Nichols Dies From Blood Poisoning. Charles H. Nichols, a carpenter, aged 65 years, formerly employed by The Diamond Match Company, died at the Florence Nightingale Hospital Thursday evening at 7 o'clock from blood-poisoning, which developed from the unfortunate man running a nail through his foot.

The deceased came to Chico about four years ago from Hadley, Mass., where his family at present resides. He also has a brother-in-law in Hartford, Conn. He was a member of the order of Knight of Pythias, and in an effort to locate his whereabouts his relatives wrote to officers of the order.

A telegram was sent to the relatives yesterday morning and it is presumed that the body will be shipped East for burial.
