Born in old Virginia (now W. Virginia) and also known as Nathan Colbert. The Colberts are identified as a family unit in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Census of Seneca Co. Ohio and arrived in Williams Co. Ohio about 1861, where they lived in rural Superior Twp., southwest of the village of Montpelier (near the hamlet of West Buffalo). Nathan Colbert's Williams Co. death record and his wife's Williams Co. estate administration record and death record do not match the dates on the stone. The surname 'Colbert' is said to be a surname of Norman-French, Norse-Germanic and Old English origin, from Kol or Kollir ('helmet') and berht ('bright' or 'famous'). There is also a possibility that the surname may have derived from the term 'colibertus', a descriptive from the 'Doomsday Book' for a freed man who was a tenant farmer in feudal England.
