Son of Clifford Guy Mayes and Mary Erma Duncan Mayes McLemore.


His mother married his stepfather when he was seven years old, and he grew up with them in the Greenfield area of Dade County, Missouri.


He married Opal Merrie (or Marie) Fleeman on 27th December 1938 in Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri. They had two daughters, Fern Merrie Mayes Seaton Brown and Nellie Mae Mayes Clayton Ladwig.


On his 16 October 1940 draft registration card, he listed his stepfather Charles Sylvester McLemore as his employer.


James and Opal were divorced sometime before the 1950 census, at which time Opal and their daughters were living with her parents.


On the 1950 census, James was imprisoned in the Twin Falls, Idaho city jail for an unknown charge.


He married Ethel Elizabeth Smith Gillies on 14 November 1951 in Shelby, Toole County, Montana. They were later divorced.


On 31 July 1967, James was arrested for driving without a license and driving while intoxicated, and was imprisoned in Wapato, Yakima County, Washington until 26 August 1967.
