Born in Maine, one of fourteen children born to Isaac James and Olive Priscilla Cates Stevens. The family made the trip across the country from Maine to Minnesota, then Colorado, and finally to New Mexico.
Shortly after the family settled in Silver City, Dick Hudson (one of the city founders) called on the family for business. He and Mary developed a friendship that culminated in marriage six months later on September 24, 1871.
Mary and Dick adopted a baby girl, Mayme Ida, and she survives her.
