Helen moved to Australia as a child with her parents Elizabeth Pemberton and Josiah Grimshaw and they settled in Greensborough. Helen married Edwin Willis Maygar (1831 Bristol-1904 Longwood) in Melbourne in 1855. The name Maygar has Hungarian origins. Helen became a farmer and their final farm and place of residence was called "Strathearn," in Longwood. Her husband is most likely buried with her as he died in the same place. Edwin moved to Australia in 1828 as a three year old with his parents and siblings.

Helen's mum was born in York, England in 1812 to Elizabeth and Thomas Pemberton. She died in Victoria Melbourne in 1855 aged 43. Helen's dad Josiah was born in Bristol in 1810 and died in Gobur, Victoria in 1892 aged 83. In 1862, Josiah was arrested for the killing of John Mitchell in Greensborough. He pleaded not guilty but was tried for murder and convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced to three years' jail. Josiah was seeing John's much younger daughter still living at home and her dad John wasn't happy about it at all.
