John Corcoran (SN 487809) entered A Company, 24th Marines from his hometown of West Roxbury, MA. He served at the battles of Roi-Namur and Saipan - he hobbled back aboard the USS Samaritan with a badly sprained ankle the day after the landing. He was returned to duty and served on Tinian, and Iwo Jima.

After ten days on the "wicked little island," A Company retired from the front lines for a much needed rest. As Corcoran relaxed with his friends, a friendly shell came bouncing toward them, moving too quickly for the startled Marines to react. The shell hit Corcoran in the stomach, leaving a small, red mark, and continued on its way. Corcoran, in shock, was helped down to an aid station, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

John Martin Corcoran is buried in the Punchbowl Cemetery.
