Doris Pauline Kramer Burkett, one of four children of John and Jessie Mellick Kramer, was born on a farm near Nelson, Nebraska, May 22, 1917. She died December 29, 1983, at her apartment at Elk Creek Manor in Nelson at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 7 days.
Her entire life was lived in the Nelson, Ruskin and Oak communities. Doris was educated from a rural school near Nelson and the Nelson Public Schools.
March 23, 1936, at Hebron, Nebraska, she was married to Grover Burkett. To this union four children were born.
Mrs. Burkett attended the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Ruskin and later joined the Salem Lutheran Church of which she was a member at the time of her death. She cooked for the Good Samaritan Home in Nelson and later retired as head cook for the Nelson Schools. In her later years, she enjoyed sewing and knitting and playing cards. Her most cherished moments was when she could be with her children and grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Grover, who died January 17, 1970; one son, Larry Lee; and one brother, Junior Kramer.
She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Myers and her husband, Clay, of Nelson, Candas Deepe and her husband, Max, of Hebron and Pamela Buresh and her husband, Tom, of Oak; one brother, Gene Kramer of Nelson; one sister, Jackie Myers of Nelson; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 30, from the Salem Lutheran Church with Pastors Jeffery Chubb and Henry Knotts officiating. A congregation hymn, "How Great Thou Art," was sung with Lillian Christensen or organist. Casketbearers were Edwin Schultz, Robert Sweenie, Charles Larison, Dr. Oscar Mussman, Don Wroughton and Henry Rogge. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
